The Montepulciano appellation extends across the Val di Chiana. The majority of the vineyards lie on gentle slopes at altitudes between 250 and 600 masl.
Here, near the Umbrian border, the climate is hotter than in northern Tuscany.
The Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is classified DOCG, as is the Chianti Classico, and it's obtained from the Sangiovese grape but exhibits different characteristics.
